Margaret Sullivan writes in The Guardian today warning that a second Trump presidency will bring fascism and authoritarianism. Many Americans are already ignoring these warnings, either because they’ve drunk the kool aid or they’ve decided, understandably, to tune out the doom and gloom in the news. But the mainstream press will also be responsible for the demise of American democracy because they continue to cover presidential elections as sports events, as Dartmouth professor Jeff Sharlet points out:

“… a press built for the horse race keeps touting a path that never existed when it should be retooling itself to cover a rapidly mutating fascism.”
