Live with Liza and Ann Telnaes!

A recording from Ann Telnaes and Liza Donnelly's live video
16

I met Liza Donnelly many years ago at the first meeting of the cartoonists rights organization, “Cartooning for Peace”. Held at the United Nations, our host was the legendary secretary-general Kofi Annan so it was quite a mind-blowing experience. Some of us were asked to give a short speech to the audience and Liza and I recently shared a laugh recalling how we were the only two cartoonists who seemed to actually prepare for it (cartoonists, myself included, are not always the best at following directions).

As some of you might have seen in an earlier post from my recent travels, Liza and I shared an exhibition in Morges, Switzerland where we did a video walk thru. I gained a new appreciation of Liza’s work during this time because even though I’m familiar with her cartoons, I hadn’t seen some of them from the exhibition before. Her drawings have always had a lovely looseness and appeal but combined with her staunch commitment for women’s equality they pack an unexpected punch.

I hadn’t seen this drawing when Liza first created it after I quit the Post earlier this year. I love it- not just for the message but for the emotional feel Liza has conveyed through just a few lines.

Liza and I are planning a regular video chat every Friday (12:30pm ET) to discuss cartoons and the past week’s news. Just about 20 minutes if you have time to grab a cup of coffee with us.
