On late Tuesday night, South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol made a surprise televised announcement declaring martial law under the guise of safeguarding the country’s liberal democracy from “anti-state forces”. In less than 48 hours Yoon has been forced to backtrack after intense pressure from both the Korean people and parliament. President Yoon “managed to turn even members of his own party against him, with the People Power chair describing his actions as “unlawful”. In their pre-dawn vote, 10 of Yoon’s party members joined opposition MPs in rejecting martial law by 190 votes to zero.”
